Why I Loved: Gary’s Proposal

I can’t talk about New Orleans without talking about  my engagement to my boyfriend of four years, but I want the main New Orleans blog to be all about the city. So, my solution is a mini blog all about the best day of my life – September 1, 2018.  I hope you enjoy it!

I knew the proposal was coming, I just didn’t know when. A month or so prior we had gone to a local jewelry store and I tried on several rings. I had written down my top three and I knew a proposal was on Gary’s mind, I just wasn’t quite sure when.

We had decided to go to New Orleans because I wanted to go. We had some hotel nights we had to use and I was itching to explore somewhere unique. I didn’t want to go to a generic city, I wanted something with character, good food, and fascinating history – New Orleans seemed to fit the bill.

I had my suspicions that Gary was going to propose during the trip but I didn’t let myself get too excited in case it didn’t happen. So, I just told myself that the trip was going to be amazing no matter what.

Looking back, there were so many little hints that Gary was going to propose, starting with him stressing out about it calling for rain there the entire weekend.

“Babe,” he said stressed out when he got home from work, right before we were due to fly out, “it’s going to rain all weekend in New Orleans!”

“It’ll be okay,” I responded, “I’m sure it won’t rain the entire time and there will be plenty of inside things to do.”

I wondered what was up with him,  I had never seen him stress out about the weather before but I chalked it up to weather stress. I then went to check for something in his backpack he uses a carry-on and I’ve never seen a man move so fast to get something out of my hand.

The final hint was when the man literally would not let me walk on the left side of him the entire day. We spent the day walking around the French Quarter, getting drinks on Bourbon Street, and eating beignets at Cafe Du Monde, and whenever I would move to his left side, he would move me back to the right.

As for the actual proposal? Well it’s easier to show than to tell. They were able to get me with the ‘can you get the trash out of the water’ bit because I am definitely the kind of person to do that.

The best day of my life .

If I had planned it myself, I couldn’t have planned it any better. I honestly hadn’t put much thought into how Gary was going to propose. I figured it would probably be during a hike or during a trip together because those are our two biggest shared hobbies.

The poem Gary wrote for me when he proposed. I’ve since framed it and will have it on display at our wedding.

I wasn’t expecting a romantic gondola ride in City Park, a beautiful poem written by Gary asking me to marry him, or all the thought that went into planning it. He did so much more than getting down on one knee in a random location and I’ll always be so grateful for that. It tells me that I am definitely making the right decision in marrying him on October 5, 2019.
