Get to Know Me!

I have gained a few new followers on Instagram and my blog has been receiving more views, so I thought I would do a quick “Get to Know Me” post! Continue below for 10 fun facts about me:

1. I started writing when I was 13 years old and it was the most angsty, teenage, shitty poetry a person could write. But it taught me to develop my own voice and write about topics close to my heart. I began writing seriously when I was still attending community college in 2010 and I’ve been writing seriously ever since. My writing “awakening” came during my first semester at Towson University when I took a Creative Non-Fiction writing class. After having a very personal essay workshopped by an entire class of talented writers – you either learn to love it or hate it. I loved it.

2. I’ve been married to my wonderful husband, Gary, since October 5, 2019. However, we actually began dating on January 23, 2015 – which means we will celebrate 5 years together next month. He has always been my biggest supporter and I feel so lucky to have him in my life. See our wedding vlog!

3. In April we adopted a one year old chihuahua/miniature pincher mix named Molly, and she is one of best decisions we made. We knew from the beginning that we wanted to adopt (as opposed to buying from a breeder) because so many amazing shelter dogs need loving homes and felt it was our duty to do our small part. She has made our lives 1000 times better and we’re so excited to take her on her first road trip in a few days!

4. Gary and I love to travel as one of our shared hobbies. It started in August 2016 when we had some time off together and needed somewhere to go. We decided on Las Vegas, Nevada and both caught the travel bug. In the five years we’ve been together, we’ve traveled to LV, the California coast (Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco), New Orleans (where we got engaged!), Orlando, Charleston, Sedona, and Aruba (where we honeymooned). Soon we’ll be adding Savannah and Boston to the list – in addition to where Gary plans our second trip. We always try to visit two or three new places every year.

5. But I’ve also done some traveling on my own. In January 2017, I studied in London with Towson University. I found it to be a challenging but amazing experience. I was with a group but I really had to learn to get myself around and take care of myself. It was tough but I’m so glad I went. I also went on my first solo trip over the summer to Asheville, North Carolina. Once again, it was challenging but incredibly worthwhile. In 2020, I’m taking my mom on her first trip to Europe and I am SO EXCITED. We’re planning on Dublin, London, and Paris and I know she’s going to have the trip of her life.

6. I’m in graduate school (almost). Next year I will be beginning the Master of Arts program in Integrated Design at University of Baltimore. It’s been about three years since I graduated from Towson University with my Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication, so I am definitely feeling the itch to get back into school. I decided on this program because it works well with my full time work schedule and it directly relates to my career goals. I’m really excited to get started but check back in with me when I’m a semester in.

7. I spent most of 2019 planning my wedding + helping Molly settle into her forever home. Now that I’ll have a bit more free time, I’m excited to work on some projects in 2020. Currently my best friend and I are in the early stages of planning a podcast and I had an idea for a play that I’m excited to explore. In 2020, I’m excited to keep growing creatively.

8. I’m really passionate about finances and I take a lot of pride in being financially literate. I think we should be more open about money and how we manage our own finances. In my 20s I learned how to budget, save for retirement, build a good credit score, and live well within my means. Now that my 30s are on the horizon, I want to become financially savvy and learn how to play the game. For example, I’ve learned how to earn free money from my credit cards (my husband and I put all our expenses on our cards –> pay off the balance each month –> enjoy our extra $50 or so we receive every month without paying anything extra than we were already spending). Also, I just started investing, so I’m really excited to learn more about investing in stocks and making my money work for me. The best part is that the company I have my investment account with only invests in green energy + ethical companies so I don’t need to worry about my money supporting causes I don’t support.

9. My husband and I live about 45 minutes outside of DC in Columbia, Maryland and we absolutely love it. It’s a great area with plenty of things to do in DC, Baltimore, and Columbia itself. It’s also a great place to be for both of our career fields. Gary is a software engineer for a major tech company and I’m a communications specialist for a major Maryland university. There is so much career growth available here and I’m excited to see where we both go.

10. I appreciate each and everyone of you that read my blog, follow me on Instagram, or like my posts on Facebook. My reach is still small, but seeing people connect with my writing and getting to meet so many amazing writers has been a great experience. I’m inspired everyday I get on instagram or facebook or the blogs I follow, and I’m grateful for everyone who reads my writing.

If you made it through all 10, thanks for sticking with me! Now I want to get to know you, leave me a fun fact about yourself in the comments.
